Executive Summary

At a 4E-class gateway airport in Southeast‑Asian, capable of handling wide-body aircraft, flight movements remain relatively sparse. Birds still gather on the runways and taxiways before each departure. Clearing them by hand is slow and labour-intensive, leaves blind spots across the airside, and rarely keeps a flock away for long. Radar and electro-optical bird-detection systems, standard equipment at larger hubs, were well beyond the facility’s budget.

RIBRI supplied a practical, streamlined alternative: the vehicle-mounted RC40Z-A. Before each departure, the team patrols the airside in a vehicle and triggers deterrent audio remotely from the in-cab controller, clearing the runway and taxiway corridors ahead of the flight. Scoped to the client’s budget, a single unit reduces bird-strike risk without the cost of radar or electro-optical detection hardware.

1.The Airport Challenge

Large airports often use integrated radar and electro‑optical detection systems to manage bird‑strike risks. This 4E‑class gateway airport in Southeast-Asian faced a different reality: it lacked the budget for such high‑end infrastructure.

Light traffic does not translate to low risk. Birds regularly congregate on runways and taxiways, and the pre‑departure window is the most vulnerable period for wildlife incursions that compromise flight safety. Lacking a cost‑effective alternative, the airfield relied solely on manual deterrence — an approach unable to provide consistent airside coverage.

It was not after a stripped‑down, low‑spec variant of a large‑airport system. Instead, it sought a solution aligned with its operational needs, with uncompromised bird‑deterrence performance. The requirement was straightforward: reliable, low‑cost bird control that a small on‑site operations team could run easily.

2.Custom Vehicle-Mounted Deployment

The project deployed our simplest deterrence option: the vehicle‑mounted RC40Z‑A for dynamic patrols, instead of fixed installations.

Unlike stationary acoustic towers or radar‑guided detection networks, this solution leverages the airport’s existing patrol vehicle. An in‑cab controller lets operators activate deterrent audio remotely while on the move. Ahead of every departure, the team patrols runway and taxiway corridors to disperse birds and secure the flight path.

The design keeps complexity to a minimum. One unit supports patrol operations, and the setup can scale later by adding more vehicles or devices if coverage requirements expand. We engineered a suitable configuration to fit the client’s available budget. Our priority was to deliver maximum value within their budget, preserving full deterrent acoustic performance.

Each site is assessed on its own operational terms, and a small regional airfield receives the same engineering attention as a major hub.

3.Core Capabilities & Specs

The RC40Z‑A is a high‑performance directional acoustic deterrent built for mobile bird control. Its ±15° beam at 2 kHz concentrates acoustic energy into a narrow, aimed pattern, delivering a peak sound pressure of 160 dBA at 1 m with clear voice intelligibility over long range. Because the beam is aimed rather than broadcast, output stays on the target area instead of spreading toward terminal buildings or nearby residential areas.

The unit mounts on the airport’s existing patrol vehicle and is operational within minutes, so it can be repositioned as bird activity shifts along the runway and taxiway corridors. A tripod or static setup remains available as backup. Built from aluminium alloy and carbon fiber, the 26 kg unit is all‑weather capable, tested to MIL‑STD‑810H and IP65‑rated.

Triggering is on demand. The operator starts playback from the in‑cab controller the moment a flock is sighted, while scheduled audio and TCP/IP or local control cover routine patrols.

4.Results & Client Feedback

Since the vehicle‑mounted RC40Z‑A entered service, the airport’s pre‑departure bird‑risk workflow has transformed. Previously, the team relied only on informal manual checks, which were inconsistent and left gaps in coverage. Now they follow a repeatable, driver‑led patrol routine. The airside is cleared ahead of every flight, without the large capital outlay required for radar or electro‑optical detection systems.

“We used to rely only on manual bird scaring, and birds kept returning to the airfield. The RC40Z‑A fitted to our patrol vehicle gives us excellent mobility. We can target and disperse flocks as soon as we spot them. We control the deterrent audio from inside the cab, with no need to step out of the vehicle. This cost‑effective solution suits our airport well: we have a limited budget and infrequent flights. We combine regular patrols with targeted deterrence before takeoff, and flight safety has improved substantially.”— Airport bird control operator

The result meets the core requirement perfectly: an affordable, self‑operated deterrent system that removes the need for high‑end detection hardware. For airports with low flight volume yet zero room to compromise on safety, mobile acoustic patrol proves that reliable bird control does not require a large, expensive budget.

Beyond this airfield, the same vehicle‑mounted directional format suits regional and remote airports, general‑aviation aerodromes, and event or temporary operations where bird control has to travel with the aircraft rather than sit in a fixed position.
