How Did Ceiling-Inverted RX460A Solve Indoor Hangar Bird-Nesting Risks?

Executive Summary

At a large aircraft MRO hangar complex in Singapore, indoor bird nesting on steel trusses created persistent risks: corrosive droppings on airframes, falling nesting debris threatening electrical bays, and recurring cleanup work that stretched into off-hours. Conventional nets and patrols failed to deliver round-the-clock protection.

Four ceiling-inverted RX460A units were deployed, one per hangar. The omnidirectional acoustic system runs autonomously, eliminating nesting activity while keeping noise levels safe for on-site maintenance crews. The installation cut recurring bird-related labour and removed fire and equipment damage risks.

1. The Hangar Challenge

Bird hazards at aviation sites are usually associated with rooftops and apron tarmac. For this Singapore aircraft maintenance complex, the critical issue was entirely inside the hangar.

Birds settled on overhead trusses, light bridges and door lintels. Their droppings etched and corroded airframes and workshop equipment. Twigs, wire scraps and other nesting debris frequently dropped toward electrical enclosures, creating ongoing arcing and fire hazards.

Traditional bird control methods were not fit for this environment. Nets tangled with aircraft maintenance workflows, while manual patrols only covered working hours. Birds quickly re-established nests overnight, on weekends and public holidays, trapping the team in a repeated cleanup cycle. The facility needed a non-intrusive, 24/7 indoor deterrence solution.

2. Custom Inverted Deployment

The project adopted a site-tailored inverted ceiling mounting layout, with one RX460A unit assigned to each of the four maintenance hangars.

Unlike standard outdoor pole or rooftop installations designed for perimeter protection, this hangar deployment suspended each unit upside down from overhead structures. The upside-down orientation lets the 360° omnidirectional acoustic output blanket the truss zone, light bridges and lintel areas where birds prefer to roost and nest — exactly the high-risk zones inside the hangar.

The installation was engineered to fit the unique constraints of aircraft MRO operations. Mounting hardware was reinforced for overhead suspension, with no support frames extending down into the working bay. There was no need for major structural alteration to the hangar building. All floor space remains fully unobstructed for aircraft towing, tooling and heavy maintenance work.

Each RX460A pairs with its dedicated local controller. Operators can set audio schedules and behaviour rules aligned to the hangar's shift pattern, covering day shifts, night shifts and long idle periods. The layout is simple and scalable: additional units can be added later if more hangar bays or high-risk zones require coverage.

3. Core Capabilities & Specs

The RX460A delivers 360° omnidirectional acoustic deterrence, with a peak sound pressure of 142 dBA @ 1 m across 250 Hz–7,000 Hz.

It supports multi-mode scheduled audio: built-in predator and distress calls, USB media playback and live voice announcements. Calibrated settings disrupt bird roosting without disturbing on-site staff. TCP/IP connectivity supports remote adjustment and status monitoring.

4. Results & Client Feedback

Following the ceiling installation of four RX460A units, day-to-day conditions inside the hangars shifted noticeably. Gone were recurring weekend cleanup tasks, constant workflow interruptions from tangled bird netting, and the persistent risk of birds re-establishing nests overnight or over public holidays.

“For years we were stuck in a cycle: clean up bird debris, run patrols, and watch birds return overnight. Since we installed the ceiling-mounted RX460A sets, nesting on overhead trusses has nearly ceased. Our team no longer spends weekends clearing hazardous nesting waste from electrical bays. Best of all, the system runs autonomously and does not interfere with our daily aircraft-maintenance workflows.”— Facility operations lead

The results map directly onto the original pain points: weekend cleanup of electrical bays has largely disappeared, the fire and arcing risk from falling nesting debris is removed, and maintenance crews work without netting or patrols interfering with aircraft movements.

The RX460A's omnidirectional coverage also works well beyond enclosed hangar interiors. It can be deployed for airport airside and aprons, solar PV farms, industrial parks and other critical infrastructure sites where wide, all-angle bird deterrence is required.
